Everyone roots for the underdog

Why support Underdogs Boxing Club?
Underdogs Boxing Club is a non-profit organization that will work towards offering a range of recreational no-contact boxing-focused programs that cater to individuals who do not routinely have access to opportunities for social and recreational physical activity.

We will begin by using the Shape Your Life program model, which uses evidence-based trauma-informed care and practice techniques to help individuals who have experienced violence reconnect their minds and bodies, improving overall health and wellbeing. As we grow, we will look to adapt the Shape Your Life program for other populations who experience trauma.

It is our hope that we can build a club that feels like an integral part of the community and that everyone not only feels they can walk through our doors but also feels like they really belong to the Underdogs community, regardless of what else might be going on in their life.

Why boxing?
Underdogs Boxing Club will be offering a variety of programs, including membership-driven women-only, men-only, and co-ed classes; membership-driven co-ed youth classes; and social programs for women who have experienced violence/trauma, which will be adapted to assist other populations who have experienced violence/trauma.

In the case of our membership-driven classes, boxing will allow members to feel empowered, build confidence, learn/know how physically strong and powerful they are, learn discipline, and relieve some stress. For the youth, specifically, the classes will also help to teach and demonstrate concept and personal boundaries.

The individuals who participate in the Shape Your Life program and its adaptations will experience all of the benefits above as well as have a healthy physical outlet for working through their trauma experience. Research shows that talk therapy is helpful and necessary, and also that there are clear and real benefits to having a physical outlet to work through the trauma experience. In particular, the longer someone experienced trauma, the more necessary it is for them to have a physical aspect to their recovery.

What do your sponsorships/donations pay for?
As a non-profit, with your help, we can better equip the club and ensure that preliminary operational costs are paid for as we build the club's membership and obtain funding for the social programs. As we grow, your sponsorships and donations will help us continue to offer programs like Shape Your Life without having to rely on government funding.

The specific items your support assists with are:

  • heavy bags, focus mitts (hand pads)
  • skipping ropes, medicine balls, miscellaneous fitness equipment
  • rent, hydro, gas, insurance
  • boxing gloves for community use by members of club
  • boxing gloves for youth members
  • hand wraps, snacks, transportation, and childcare for SYL participants
  • trauma-informed counseling for SYL participants
  • memberships for people experiencing poverty
